Simile :
In this figure of speech, two unlike things are compared using “like” or “as”.

Metaphor :
In this figure of speech two unlike things are compared without using “Like” or “as”. It is a form of direct comparison.
For example –
- He is a shining star.
- The mountains are covered with white blanket.
Personification :
In this figure of speech inanimate and abstract ideas are treated as living.
For example –
- The wind howled in the night.
- Lightening danced across the sky
Hyperbole :
It is a literary device which uses extreme exaggeration to make a point or emphasize.
For example –
- My grandmother is as old as the hills.I
- am so hungry that I can eat a horse
Pun :
A pun is a play on words that produces a humorous effect by using a word that suggests two or more meanings or by exploiting similar sounding words that have different meanings.
For example –
- Santa Claus’ helpers are known as subordinate clauses.
- The pianist had a good marriage. They always were in chord.
Repetition :
It is literary device that repeats the same words or phrases a few times to make an idea clearer and emphatic.
For example –
- Smile and smile and smile
- Far, Far away
Alliteration :
It is literary device in which a number of words, having the same first consonant sound, occur close together in a series.
For example –
- A big bully beats a body boy
- Lines of light
Paradox :
It is a literary device which is self-contradictory but includes a latent truth. It is also used to illustrate an opinion or statement contrary to accepted traditional ideas.
For example –
- I must be cruel to be kind.
- The child is the father of the man
Antithesis :
It emphasizes the idea of contrast by parallel structure of contrasted phrases or clauses. The structures of phrases or clauses are similar, in order to draw the attention of the listeners or readers.
For example –
- Man proposes, God disposes.
- Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice
Oxymoron :
It is a figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are joined to create an effect. A common example of oxymoron is a noun preceded by an adjective with contrasting meanings, such as ‘cruel kindness’, “Living death”.
Transferred Epithet :
In this figure of speech an epithet is transferred from its proper word to another that is closely associated with it in the sentence.
For example –
- sleepless night
- Blind mouths.
Anaphora:
Anaphora is the repetition of words or phrases in the beginning of a group of sentences, clauses, or poetic lines.
For example –
- Cease from travel.
- Cease from buying and selling.
- Give up, just for now, on trying to make the world different than it is.
- Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
Anastrophe :
Anastrophe is a figure of speech in which the normal word order of the subject, the verb, and the object is changed. For example, subject-verb-object (“I like potatoes”) might be changed to object-subject=verb (“potatoes I like”).
For example – “
- Leader I am,” stated the dictator using an anastrophe to emphasize his position in the country.

IMAGERY
Imagery is a literary device used in poetry, novels, and other writing that uses vivid description that appeals to a readers’ senses to create an image or idea in their head. Through language, imagery does not only paint a picture, but aims to portray the sensational and emotional experience within text.

- The autumn leaves are a blanket on the ground.
- The kitten’s fur is milky.
